Deputies responded around 5:20 p.m. on Monday to a home in the 1200 block of Tobacco Barn Road, near Fuquay-Varina. When they arrived, they found a 12-year-old girl and 9-year-old boy with life-threatening injuries consistent with an assault, the sheriff's office said.
The girl later died at the hospital. The cause and manner of death were not specified.
Deputies searched the area with a drone and K-9 officers and found Jackson Borrello nearby.
It's believed he attacked the 9-year-old with a knife and a hammer, according to an arrest warrant.
On Tuesday, Wake County deputies were back out at the home continuing this investigation.
Neighbors said they would see the children up and down this street.
"I was horrified and shocked, and I was wondering what is going on?" said Arlene Melchiorre, a neighbor. "So I went out to see if I could see a little closer what was going on, because there were tons of law enforcement, fire trucks, and EMS. So I went out to my lawn, and two police officers basically said to me, get back inside. Stay indoors. And then I saw the K-9 unit right there in my little patch."
Borello was supposed to appear before a Wake County judge on Tuesday afternoon, but he did not make that appearance. Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman couldn't provide exact details on why, but said Borrello couldn't be transported Tuesday.
ABC11 is working to find out the relationship between the suspect and the victims. The Wake County Sheriff's Office would only say they knew each other.
