CHEROKEE COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is conducting a death investigation after the recent discovery of human remains near a mountain.

On Jan. 23, a hiker found a skull in a remote area near Burrell Mountain in Cherokee County. The sheriff's office conducted a few more searches weeks later in the surrounding area, leading to the recovery of more remains. The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) and anthropology students at Western Carolina University (WCU) assisted in the recovery of remains.

Weeks later, the SBI announced the remains were those of 35-year-old Kamron Peter Rondon.

Rondon was never reported missing to any law enforcement agencies, according to investigators.

The sheriff's office is now investigating Rondon's cause of death and how his remains ended up in that area.

State Bureau of Investigation said the human remains found by a hiker in WNC belonged to 35-year-old Kamron Peter Rondon (pictured).
