The Chapel Hill Police Department said Alexander Quinn Zeman, 32, of Chapel Hill, was arrested following the incident at Chapel Hill Community Center Park on South Estes Drive.
Officers said the robbery happened around 12:18 a.m. when Zeman approached two people sitting in the park, pointed a gun at them and demanded their keys before stealing their vehicle.
No injuries were reported.
Police said officers later found Zeman in the area of Elizabeth Street and took him into custody.
He is charged with:
- Robbery with a dangerous weapon
- Assault by pointing a gun
- Larceny of a motor vehicle
- Possession of a motor vehicle
- Going armed to the terror of the public
"From the moment our officers and investigators received this call, they worked quickly to identify and find this suspect," said Chapel Hill Police Chief Celisa Lehew.
Zeman is expected to make his first court appearance Wednesday at 2 p.m. He is being held at the Orange County Detention Center without bond.
