It happened around 10 in the 1100 block of Brook Street, which is off Hay Street.
Police said no one was in the house when someone broke in, but then the homeowner returned.
Police said the burglar fired a shot, hitting the homeowner.
Officers found the resident inside suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. He was expected to recover.
No arrests have been made.
