This happened just outside the town on Highway 50 Monday night.
NCSHP says an elderly couple attempted to turn around when their car ended up stuck in the ditch.
A tow truck driver arrived to help them so 70-year-old Thomas Brown started directing traffic around the car.
That's when someone driving by hit Brown, killing him.
The driver remained on the scene.
Police are investigating the incident.
