Walker was recognized Friday after being chosen from a field of eight other principals for the statewide honor. As part of the recognition, she will spend the next school year traveling across North Carolina as an ambassador for the profession.
Monday's celebration at the Raleigh school featured students, staff and family members honoring Walker's leadership and impact on the school community.
"I am speechless," Walker said. "I was in a meeting and I just had no idea that you were up to all these wonderful things today."
During the ceremony, Walker spoke about the importance of purpose and encouragement in education.
"Because there is nothing else more important that will sustain you in your life then believing that this world will be better because of something only you can bring," Walker said.
Students past and present also reflected on Walker's influence on their academic experiences and personal growth.
"Here, students are taught to be ready to lead, better to learn, and ready to serve," said Shakirat Bello, a freshman at the school. "And honestly, who better represents these principles than Dr. Walker herself?"
Walker closed the celebration with a message of optimism and encouragement for students across the state.
"My greatest hope for each of you, and all the students in our state, is to find something that brings your life joy and you'll be able to go out into the world and do it," Walker said. "Because our world needs more positivity, more passion, and much more intellect from amazing young women like you."
Walker is also a four-time graduate of North Carolina State University and holds various leadership roles in Wake County.
