21-year-old man charged with impersonating Robeson County high school student

RED SPRINGS, N.C. (WTVD) -- A 21-year-old man is charged with pretending to be a student at Red Springs High School and is accused of having sex with minors.

Matthew Edward Jones was taken into custody on January 15 after staff members at Red Springs High School noticed a suspicious person walking the campus.

School staff noticed the man was not a student after questioning him and immediately reached out to the School Resource Center.

Jones was taken into custody that afternoon by investigators who discovered possible sexual assaults that happened off campus.



Jones has been charged with the following offenses:
  • Statutory sexual offense with a child under the age of 15.

  • Indecent liberties with a child.

  • Solicitation of a child by computer.

  • First-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.

  • Third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.


Jones is currently being held at the Robeson County Detention Center without bond.
