Officers responded around 12:18 p.m. Wednesday to a reported shooting at a strip mall in the 4500 block of New Bern Avenue. As officers were responding, they learned that numerous shots had been fired into a Wingstop restaurant before the suspect left the scene.
Police said no injuries were reported.
Chopper 11 was over the scene, where multiple bullet holes could be seen in the restaurant's windows.
In the middle of the busy shopping center, people were shocked to hear gunfire.
"I'm getting ready to head into the Walmart when I heard about five or six gunshots," said Cleveland Sanders.
He said he went inside the store, not knowing where the shots came from.
"I guarantee you about two, three minutes later, you'd see a lot of police, and that's exactly what happened," Sanders said.
During the investigation, detectives identified 19-year-old Maxwell Franks as the suspect and shared that information with officers and law enforcement partners.
On Thursday, Wake County Sheriff's Office deputies took Franks into custody.
He is charged with:
- Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill
- Three counts of felony conspiracy
- 14 counts of discharging a weapon into occupied property
- Going armed to the terror of the public
- Discharging a firearm within city limits
Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
