RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Despite rainy conditions on Monday morning, an annual Memorial Day tradition continued at the North Carolina State Capitol, where participants gathered to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"Today, we stand together to name the cost of freedom."

The ceremony included the sound of bagpipes, marking a solemn tribute for families and service members across the state. Memorial Day holds deep meaning in North Carolina, which is home to more than 90,000 active-duty military members across all branches, along with thousands of veterans and military families.

Each year, members of Alpha Phi Alpha gather at the Capitol for the ceremony, reflecting on the lives lost in service to the country. "Memorial Day belongs to those who cannot hear our gratitude and praise.

We remember what they gave up and why. It asks us to hold silence, to speak names, and to promise their sacrifice shall not be swallowed by time." For organizer Tyrone Ashe, a veteran, the ceremony carries personal significance.

"We went over with 160 men, and we came back with 13. And only four of them can tell you their name, rank and serial number. So it's my pleasure to do this to honor them today."

The event concluded with the traditional playing of Taps, a moment Ashe said resonates deeply with those who have served. "And for all of us in the military or who have been in the military Taps is very meaningful to us because it signals the end."

Ashe said he was encouraged to see young Marines in attendance Monday, noting that their presence shows the next generation is learning the importance and meaning of Memorial Day.
