RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Mexican Consulate of Raleigh is often bustling with people, but ABC11 found nobody waiting in line Wednesday. Officials said attendance has dropped significantly, roughly 83%, since federal immigration enforcement started moving into North Carolina.

ABC11 was told there were usually approximately 350 people per day who stopped by for services. On Tuesday, there were just 57 Mexican nationals who came to the consulate.

Consul General of Mexico in Raleigh Donaji Alba Arroyo said there's a lot of fear right now in that community.

"We have, we had some difficult days here," said Arroyo. "We have rights being a Mexican citizens in this country."

ABC11 also learned that the consulate has stepped in to help five people in North Carolina who have been detained, and it says the consulate stands ready to assist others.

Arroya said she has been in communication with Mexico's president about the string of detentions in Charlotte and Raleigh.

"As President Claudia Sheinbaum says, 'We have coordination, but not subordination,'" said Arroyo.

She there's been an increase in people reaching out by phone or social media for guidance around the federal immigration enforcement detentions, and that the consulate is a haven.

"We came here to ... we came to the United States to work, and the Mexican workers are the most strong people that I have ever knew," said Arroyo. "We're going to be together, and the Mexican consulate is here for them."

There is a hotline for Mexican nationals to get information 24/7. The number is (520) 623-7874.
