Beware of ticket scams: AG warns fans ahead of UNC-Duke showdown

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Attorney General Jeff Jackson is warning North Carolinians to be on the lookout for ticket sale scams ahead of the highly anticipated UNC-Duke men's basketball game.

Scammers are using social media platforms like TikTok to advertise tickets for the Feb. 7 matchup at the Dean Smith Center. They often claim to be reselling tickets due to a family emergency or tragedy, then request payment through peer-to-peer apps like Venmo or Zelle -- only to send fake tickets.

"The UNC-Duke rivalry is one of the most anticipated sporting events in the country," Jackson said. "Scammers are trying to exploit that excitement to trick fans into purchasing fake tickets. We want everyone to enjoy the game, not lose their hard-earned money to a scam."

To avoid falling victim, Jackson offers these tips:
  • Stick to reputable platforms like established ticket sales sites and verify the URL for security features like a lock icon and https.
  • Be skeptical of sob stories about urgent sales due to family emergencies-this is a common scam tactic.
  • Pay with protection by using a credit card instead of debit cards or peer-to-peer apps, as credit cards offer better fraud protection.
  • Check refund policies from reputable sellers, who should clearly outline their terms and answer questions.
  • Know the law for in-person sales: North Carolina prohibits charging more than $3 over the ticket's face value.

If you suspect a scam, you can file a complaint with the Consumer Protection Division at 1-877-5-NO-SCAM or online.
