GRANVILLE COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- In Granville County, Carolina Coops is crafting high-end chicken coops shipped around the world, but it all started with scrap metal.

Founder Matt DuBois built his first coop in Durham in 2009 during the economic downturn.

"We were just in survival mode... one of my happiest moments was finding what I needed in a dumpster."

That side hustle quickly grew into a global brand, with custom coops designed for everyone from first-time chicken owners to homesteaders-and even celebrities like Mike Tyson.

After turning down Shark Tank, DuBois says investor Daymond John still reached out and now mentors the business.

The coops are designed to be both functional and eye-catching, with features like a deep litter system that only requires cleaning about once a year.

DuBois says moving to Granville County-and the support from local economic development-made all the difference in helping the business grow.

The company is also focused on giving back-creating jobs and supporting the community that helped it grow.

One of the ways it gives back is by donating coops to correctional facilities to support rehabilitation programs through gardening and hands-on skills training.

"We're proud to put North Carolina on the map wherever our coops go." Dubois added.
