2 dead, multiple injured after fight in NC turns into a shootout at a park in Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Winston-Salem Police Department (WSPD) confirms that multiple people have been injured in a shooting at a city park.

Police say two people met at Leinbach Park to fight Monday morning just before 10:00 a.m.

At some point, police say the fight escalate and turned into a shootout when people started shooting at each other and several were hit by gunfire. WSPD says they have identified the individuals who fired shots and the ones injured. They say some them are juveniles.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) has joined the investigation and confirms that two people have died.

There are schools in the area that were immediately placed after shots were fired, however that has changed.



According to WSPD updates, Jefferson Middle is operating as normal but parents are being allowed to pick up their children and Mount Tabor High School is also operating as normal and parents can pick up their children if they choose to do so.

The park and streets surrounding the area open on a limited basis while police continue to investigate.

Winston-Salem police say they will provide updates on their social media accounts.
