According to the Sampson County Sheriff's Office, the pursuit started around 12:20 a.m. on Fayetteville Highway. Deputies were conducting a driver's license checkpoint in the area when they said a driver went through without stopping.
Deputies initiated a pursuit of the driver, who they say failed to stop and continued on Fayetteville Highway toward Newton Grove. When the driver approached a traffic circle, the teen drove through it and crashed.
That's when officers took the 16-year-old into custody.
Further investigation revealed that the car was reported stolen on Sunday in the Maxwell Road area of Sampson County.
The driver was charged on a juvenile petition with:
- Felony Fleeing to Elude Arrest
- Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle
- Injury to Real Property
- Speeding
- Fictitious Registration
- Resist, Delay, or Obstruct a Public Officer
- No Operator's License
- Failure to Stop for a Red Light
