Family without running water for months finally gets help from community in Granville County

GRANVILLE COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- A Granville County family has been without running water for months, but they are now receiving help.

The Nicholsons' well dried up in April, and a new one would cost at least $12,000, leaving them in a financial bind. Linda Nicholson, who was laid off by the state last year, relies on Social Security and has struggled to manage other financial obligations.

For nearly four months, the family has relied on donated water and purchased water. When that wasn't enough, they traveled to a natural spring miles from their home to fill jugs. They've had to boil water to wash their hands, take limited baths, and cook on the stove. Showers have required trips to the YMCA.

It's been tough for Linda, saying she took running water for granted before this but will never do so again.

"Especially at 72," she said, "carrying water jugs. I waited one day because my arms were sore."

Linda's daughter started a fundraiser, and a nearby church, Rushing Waters Outreach, is hosting a BBQ fundraiser on Aug. 15 to help to family.
