DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- UNC System leaders across the Triangle are cutting positions and eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) offices to be in compliance with the new Equality Policy.

North Carolina Central University (NCCU) reallocated three positions from its DEI office to the newly established Office of Student Development and Support. It's also removed DEI signage across the campus and online.

The HBCU said 900 web pages have been modified, and it continues to do spot checks. Additionally, all intercultural and LGBTQIA Centers have been converted to student wellness lounges. It said $174,000 has been redirected to student well-being and retention initiatives, and nearly $45,000 in student activity fees were also reassigned to student success programs.

Students have questions about all the changes they are seeing.

"There were questions from the students essentially about the policy. Students shared their concerns, but it was a directive that came down from the UNC System. The messaging to the students have been that we will be in compliance as a university," said NCCU Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Dr. Angela Coleman.

UNC-Chapel Hill is also making changes to its equality policy. The university has eliminated 61 full-time and part-time appointment positions. Additionally, 27 positions were realigned to perform policy-compliant work. The university's DEI office has been shut down, and all DEI trainings on bias and microaggressions were discontinued.

All UNC system colleges and universities were asked to carefully consider programs and practices in light of policy requirements.

"I think we've had a lot of success. We can't promise that we've cut every single thing. It is an effort that folks very much so undertook seriously," said Senior University Counsel Attorney Kirsten Stevenson.

The UNC Board of Governors has directed the Board of Trustees at each campus to form a new sub-committee that will scrutinize compliance with DEI policies.
