North Carolina lawmakers react to Trump's State of the Union

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- North Carolina lawmakers are weighing in on President Trump's State of Union address Tuesday night.

The president's speech, which is the longest State of the Union address in history, highlighted the economy, claiming the country is "bigger, better, richer, and stronger than ever."

Other key takeaways are tributes to the Olympic hockey team and war veterans; taking an aim at Democrats; Supreme Court's "unfortunate" decision regarding Trump's tariff policy; and voter ID.

Here are some reactions from both sides:

NRCC Chairman Richard Hudson (R-NC):
"Tonight, President Trump laid out a clear, unapologetic vision for restoring strength, security, and prosperity for the American people. From securing the border to lowering costs and putting working families first, this administration is delivering results where Democrats delivered chaos. House Republicans are proud to stand with President Trump to keep our majority and continue advancing an agenda focused on safety, opportunity, and common sense. The choice couldn't be clearer as we continue building an America that works again."

Congresswoman Deborah Ross (NC-02):
"Unsurprisingly, tonight Donald Trump was divisive and deceptive. He touted a union that is strong and a country where every American can afford to get by and get ahead. But right now, millions of Americans can't afford groceries, rent, utilities, health care, and other basic necessities. Instead of addressing these problems tonight, Trump praised his harmful tariffs that continue to jack up costs and promoted his "Big Ugly Law," which cut taxes for the ultra-wealthy and ripped health care away from millions of Americans.

"When it comes to Donald Trump, promises made are promises broken. He said he would only deport violent criminals. Instead, his administration is targeting parents and breadwinners while terrorizing entire communities. He claimed he would "love and cherish Medicaid." Instead, he signed into law the largest Medicaid cut in history. He said he would release the Epstein files. Instead, he continues to cover for himself and rich and powerful abusers at the expense of innocent victims."

"Tonight's speech was a giant slap in the face to every North Carolinian who is struggling to make ends meet and every American who believes our leaders should tell the truth. Our country deserves better."

Wesley Knott, Wake County Democratic Party Chair:
So, this is someone who lacks the capacity to grapple with the reality that everyday Americans are facing. So, he is speaking to a country full of people who when they go to the grocery store and when they fill up their gas tank and when they pay their rent and their utility bills, they know that prices are higher. And rather than saying we know prices are higher, and here's our plan to fix it, the only message we get from this administration is things are better than they've ever been.

Congressman Richard Hudson (NC-09):
"President Trump laid out a powerful case for the American comeback and proved strong leadership delivers results. Inflation is down to 2.4%, gas is at a four-year low, private sector jobs are rising, and the Working Families Tax Cuts are putting more money back in the pockets of seniors, parents, and small businesses."

"House Republicans are working with President Trump to secure the border, unleash American energy, cut costly regulations, rebuild our military, and deliver historic tax relief. Under President Trump's leadership, America is getting stronger every day."
