Lawmakers back 'Super Speeders' bill targeting dangerous North Carolina drivers

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- North Carolina lawmakers and traffic-safety advocates gathered Wednesday to highlight a new proposal aimed at curbing dangerous speeding and reducing deadly crashes across the state.

The legislation, often referred to as the "Super Speeders Bill", would require certain high-risk drivers to use Intelligent Speed Assistance technology. The device uses location-based data to prevent a vehicle from exceeding the posted speed limit.

Under the bill, ISA would be mandated for drivers whose licenses were revoked for reckless driving or extreme speeding once they regain driving privileges.

The push comes as state data shows the toll of speeding on North Carolina roads. In 2024, 378 people were killed in speed-related crashes, and nearly 8,000 others were injured. Of the fatal crashes, 62% involved drivers going more than 10 mph over the speed limit.

Amy Cohen, founder of Families for Safe Streets, whose son was killed by a speeding driver, said the bill targets the most dangerous offenders.

"It targets the worst of the worst drivers. You can still get around; you just need to drive carefully," Cohen said.

North Carolina is now the 17th state to consider adopting ISA technology.
