Novartis finalizes new manufacturing facility in Morrisville as part of major US expansion

MORRISVILLE, M.C. (WTVD) -- Pharmaceutical giant Novartis plans to add a new manufacturing facility in Morrisville, expanding its footprint in North Carolina as part of a broader push to strengthen U.S.-based drug production.

The company announced Thursday it will build a 56,200-square-foot active pharmaceutical ingredient manufacturing facility focused on producing materials used in solid dosage tablets, capsules and RNA therapeutics. Novartis says the new site will help strengthen end-to-end manufacturing in the United States, from active ingredients through finished medicines.

The Morrisville project will mark Novartis' seventh new facility announced within a year, following the company's $23 billion investment plan aimed at expanding U.S.-based manufacturing and research and development. With the addition of the new site, Novartis will operate five facilities across three locations in North Carolina.

Company leaders said the North Carolina facility plays a key role in ensuring medicines developed for U.S. patients can be produced domestically.

"By building a connected, end-to-end footprint, we are strengthening our ability to locally develop, produce and deliver medicines at scale," said Vas Narasimhan, CEO of Novartis, in a statement.

Novartis says the infrastructure in Morrisville will support both current medicines and future therapies, including advanced treatments such as RNA-based drugs. The company also noted the expansion aligns with its ongoing effort to manufacture all key Novartis medicines for U.S. patients within the U.S., a commitment first outlined in 2025.

North Carolina has become a central hub in Novartis' nationwide growth strategy. In December 2025, the company broke ground on a flagship manufacturing hub elsewhere in the state, adding production and packaging for treatments across oncology, immunology, neuroscience and cardiovascular diseases.

Beyond North Carolina, Novartis' recent U.S. expansions include new research and manufacturing facilities in California, Texas and Florida, as well as expansions in Indiana and New Jersey. Company officials say these investments are designed to support time-sensitive and advanced therapies, including cancer treatments.
