PBS NC to give employees voluntary separation offers, implements hiring freeze amid funding cuts

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. (WTVD) -- Because of federal funding cuts totaling millions, PBS North Carolina announced that the organization will offer voluntary separation offers to most permanent employees.

This is part of the Reorganization through Reduction (RTR) program, a press release said, a measure which is designed to minimize the possibility of involuntary staff reductions

"We did not create this -- it was dictated by Congress," said David Crabtree, CEO of PBS North Carolina. "Nonetheless, we will play the hand we're dealt and pledge to continue to be good stewards of our budgets."

Back in July, Congress passed a bill eliminating previously approved funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. As a result, PBS NC lost $4.8 million in annual funding, which the organization says helps them to provide educational programming and critical emergency communications infrastructure.

In addition, the organization said it has implemented a hiring freeze, eliminated vacant positions, and made reductions in non-personnel expenses.

PBS NC, then WUNC-TV, began in 1955. This is 12 years before the Corporation for Public Broadcasting was created.

"While this is a time of fundamental change for public media, it reminds us of our deep roots in the communities we serve... PBS North Carolina still belongs to the people of this state, and our commitment is unwavering." Crabtree said.
