CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- A person was killed after being hit by a vehicle along Interstate 95 southbound Thursday morning.

Just after 7 a.m., crews with the Pearce's Mill Fire Department, Cumberland County EMS and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to I-95 near Doc Bennet Road.

When emergency crews arrived, they found the victim lying in the southbound lanes of the interstate. First responders performed CPR, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene after EMS arrived.

Officials have not released the victim's identity.

The crash led to the closure of the southbound lanes while crews worked at the scene and traffic was diverted. Authorities say the roadway has since reopened.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
