Officers responded about 1:30 p.m. to an emergency call in the 1100 block of Star Street. They found that a 2-year-old had been attacked by two family dogs, both described as pit bull mix breeds.
First responders performed life-saving measures at the scene before rushing the child to UNC Nash Hospital, where the child was later pronounced dead.
Both dogs were surrendered to the Rocky Mount Animal Services Unit.
The incident remains under investigation.
The Criminal Investigations Division, evidence technicians, and the North Carolina Department of Social Services are assisting with the investigation.
