It happened Friday at a home in the 700 block of Cedar Grove Road.
Chatham County deputies responded after a woman called 911 and said her husband was trying to kill her.
The couple's 4-year-old son was also in the home.
Deputies arrived and got the woman out of the home. They then heard multiple gunshots while trying to get the suspect to come out of the home.

A short time later, the suspect, Michael Levandoski Jr., 41, came out of the home and was taken into custody.
A dog was found dead inside the home with several gunshot wounds. Deputies also found several spent shell casings and a Smith & Wesson revolver.
The woman and her young son were taken to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill for medical evaluation.
Levandoski was taken to UNC Hospitals for a mental health evaluation.
He was charged with two counts of felony assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, one count of felony second degree kidnapping, one count of felony cruelty to animals, one count of felony discharging a weapon into an occupied dwelling, two counts of felony assault by strangulation, one count of felony negligent child abuse inflicting serious physical injury, one count of misdemeanor communicating threats, one count of misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, and one count of misdemeanor assault on a female.
Levandoski received a $50,000 secured bond on some charges and no bond on more serious charges.
He is being held in the Chatham County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 3.
