MOORESVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- NASCAR fans will have an opportunity to honor the life and legacy of Kyle Busch during a public memorial service scheduled for Oct. 9 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Organizers announced the service will take place following the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race and will be free and open to the public. Fans, members of the racing community, friends and family will be invited to gather in remembrance of Busch and his impact on the sport.

Busch died at the age of 41 back in May after being hospitalized for severe pneumonia that progressed into sepsis.

Sepsis is considered a life-threatening medical emergency that occurs when the body has an extreme, overactive response to an infection, causing the immune system to damage its own tissues and organs, according to the CDC.

The two-time Cup Series champion won more races than anyone across NASCAR's three national series.

Additional details, including the time of the service, speakers and other event logistics, are expected to be released in the coming weeks as plans are finalized.

Organizers said the memorial will celebrate Busch's accomplishments and lasting influence on NASCAR and generations of racing fans.
