The Raleigh Planning Commission voted 7-1 in favor of Kane Realty's zoning request to increase building heights from 12 to 40 stories in North Hills.
The agency wants to build new towers around the busy area of Six Forks Road and Lassiter Mill Road in midtown Raleigh.
The planning commission heard from several residents that they are concerned the new project would only add to congestion along an already traffic-prone road.
Some spoke out against the request because of infrastructure concerns. Others, however, supported the rezoning for growth opportunities in the neighborhood.
The request is now moved to the Raleigh City Council.
