SNAP benefits were restored Friday nearly two weeks after they lapsed because of the government shutdown.
Even though he now has money in this account, Thomas says he's still dealing with a lot of anxiety.
"Now we always going to think 'Is this going to happen again? Is this going to happen again?'" said Thomas.
He showed Eyewitness News how much was deposited into his EBT account. Thomas is getting about $110 each month for food.
He's grateful the benefits were restored now that the government shutdown is over.
"It's good you did it, but it's bad because of what you put people through," said Thomas. "These are the kind of feelings that don't go away tomorrow."
Thomas is going to use this money for Thanksgiving. He's been taking advantage of the community's generosity at food banks and food drives during the shutdown.
"Right now I got what I need at my house and I'll do the bare minimum," said Thomas.
DHHS says there should be no issue with December benefits and they'll be deposited as scheduled.
A recent survey from Coupon Follow finds that 72% of Americans receiving SNAP benefits are worried they won't be able to afford food for their families this holiday season, and 44% aren't planning to host this holiday season.
Folks ABC11 spoke with also say because of the current economic condition, their celebrations will be scaled back this year.
"The prices are crazy," said Raleigh resident Jade McNeil.
"Less items, less people. We're probably doing something small this year, just around here. We were supposed to go out of town, but it's look like we're going to stay home this year."
