FORT BRAGG, N.C. (WTVD) -- Service members, veterans and their families gathered at Fort Bragg Saturday for the annual Red, White and Boom Fest, a large-scale celebration honoring America's 250th anniversary.

Despite some early showers, the event's energy remained high as soldiers, veterans and their families filled the Main Post Parade Field.

"I don't want torrential downpour, but I'm okay with sprinkles," attendee Erika Admas said.

U.S. Army Garrison Commander Mixon was also in attendance. He is retiring this year after 31 years of service and noted military families were admitted free.

"This is a great deal for them," Mixon said. "A huge morale boost. You know, we do a lot of hard training on Fort Bragg. That's our history and a lot of deployments, obviously. But, and we can have events like this. It's just it's a great deal for everyone."

The celebration began with a performance by the 82nd Airborne Division Band and a demonstration by an all-veteran parachute team. Organizers also brought in national music acts spanning rock, country and pop, including Hoobastank.

Attendees described the atmosphere as patriotic and community-driven.

"It feels like one large family," said U.S. Coast Guard member Correna Ambrose. "Family-friendly, patriotic, community, unity."

The festival also features a headlining performance by The Fray, followed by a fireworks display.

"Number one is fireworks. It's my favorite holiday. It's my favorite event," Ambrose said.

Red, White and Boom Fest is one of several events across central North Carolina leading up to Fourth of July celebrations.
