The Raleigh Planning Commission discussed the rezoning on Tuesday, which would allow for a new housing development between Litchford Road and Johnsdale Road near the high school.
Neighbors have raised concerns about pedestrian safety, saying students frequently walk in the area and that Johnsdale Road is not equipped to handle additional vehicle traffic that could come with the development. Some homeowners have also expressed concerns about increased traffic on Litchford Road and the traffic pattern.
The developer said plans have been updated to address concerns raised by residents. Changes include adding a condition that would restrict access to Johnsdale Road to reduce traffic impacts and reducing the number of housing units from 54 to 47.
The revised plan would still increase the number of proposed units from the original request of 32 units on the site.
Homeowners have accused city leaders of prioritizing development over safety, arguing the project could make nearby roads more dangerous.
A vote on the rezoning was originally expected Tuesday, but the developer requested a delay until Aug. 11. The Planning Commission's decision will then serve as a recommendation to the Raleigh City Council, meaning a final resolution on the rezoning may not take place for several months.
