DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- A high school in Durham was put under lockdown Friday morning after a report of a weapon on campus. It has since been lifted.

The school was under lockdown while officers conducted a safety sweep.

Durham Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Anthony Lewis said in a statement that the school received a tip Friday morning of a possibly armed person on the Riverside campus. A spokesperson for Durham Public Schools said that the tip was found to be unsubstantiated.

"Our safety and security department, school administration, and sheriff's department worked quickly and effectively to lock down the school and conduct a thorough search and questioning," Lewis said. "After completing their work, the tip was found to be unsubstantiated. While this matter certainly caused angst, we are pleased with the outcome."

The Durham Police Department assisted the sheriff's office with the response.

"Once again, someone saw something and said something about a potentially life-threatening situation," Lewis said. "I am extremely grateful that this matter has been resolved successfully ... We will remain vigilant and ask for support as we continue the important work of academics in an environment that is safe and secure."
