It happened about 1 p.m. Wednesday at the New Dixie Mart gas station, formerly known as Presto, at 142 Julian R. Alsbrook.
Officers arrived and found a man dead outside the store. He was identified as Dasean L. Banks of Roanoke Rapids.
A second man, Anthony Shearin, of Roanoke Rapids, was found inside the store suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to ECU North Hospital and transferred to Greenville for further treatment, but later died from his injuries.
No one has been charged with the shootings, but Wiggins said Ju-Quan Letrae Rawles, of Roanoke Rapids, was charged with obstruction of justice "for actions following the shooting incident."
The incident remains under active investigation, police said.

The Halifax County Sheriff's Office also responded and provided "additional support to this investigation," Wiggins said.
The Daily Herald reported that all Roanoke Rapids Schools were on a soft lockdown during the incident. That safety measure was lifted just after 2:20 p.m.
