Safe Kids NC gives away free car seats to Chantal victims

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) -- A few weeks ago, communities in Orange County were hit with devastating flooding. Many unsuspecting drivers also lost their cars and their car seats in the floodwater.

Safe Kids North Carolina, as well as the Orange County Sheriff's Office and first responders, came together on Friday to help those impacted and other community members keep their kids safe.

Nearly a dozen cars stopped by on Friday morning to either have their seats checked or be offered a brand new seat altogether.

The giveaway had some seats for infants up to boosters for older kids.

Kaitlyn Dixon is a mom of four, so this is not her first rodeo - but even she learned something new.

"Is just very important because you never know what's going to happen to other drivers. This morning I had to hit up brakes, and it could have been worse. I may not know if my kids weren't safely in their car seats. Properly, almost. So it's just you. Your kids' safety is more important than anything," Dixon said.

Fire Marshall Brian Tyler said that it is not uncommon and it always pays off.

"I had three kids before I took my class, and I learned so much from that. And I've been in the fire service for 35 years. So it's rewarding to see that you can make a difference and save a life," he said.

SafeKids will also be giving seats on Saturday, Aug. 2, from 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM at the Mebane Fire Station 2 at 405 N First Street in Mebane.
