Sarah P. Duke Gardens debuts major Garden Gateway redesign

Thursday, April 9, 2026
DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Garden Gateway project at Sarah P. Duke Gardens officially opened to the public Wednesday, unveiling a major redesign and enhancing the visitor experience in Durham.

The $30 million renovation includes a new main entrance and Barnes Welcome Center, featuring a café, visitor lobby, gallery space, classrooms and outdoor gathering areas. The project also expanded green spaces and renovated the Doris Duke Center, which now hosts events and weddings.

Construction began in February 2025 and funded through private donations.

Duke Gardens officials say the upgrades improve access, sustainability and amenities while preserving the character of one of the Triangle's most popular destinations.

"Duke Gardens is one of the most visited destinations in the Triangle, and the Garden Gateway allows us to better serve our growing community. The new entranceway improves access and wayfinding, and the Barnes Welcome Center greatly enhances visitor amenities and services," Duke Gardens executive director Bill LeFevre said. "We sincerely appreciate the community support that made this project possible and look forward to welcoming both new and returning visitors."

The main entrance at 420 Anderson Street has reopened with limited on site parking. Additional weekend parking is available at Duke University's Campus Drive lot, while pedestrian access remains open through Flowers Drive.
