SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (WTVD) -- A traffic stop in Moore County quickly turned dangerous Saturday morning, ending with a crash that injured several people -- including a young child -- along a busy stretch of road.

Authorities say a sheriff's deputy tried to pull over a driver around 11:45 a.m. near U.S. 1 and Magnolia in Aberdeen. Instead of stopping, the driver sped off.

Just over a mile away, near U.S. 1 and Saunders Boulevard in Southern Pines, that driver slammed into multiple vehicles.

The crash left several people hurt. Officials say a total of four people were taken to the hospital -- three by ambulance to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital and one by helicopter to a trauma center.

One of the most serious injuries involved a passenger in the fleeing Chevrolet Impala. She was trapped inside the wreckage, and firefighters had to use hydraulic rescue tools to free her before she was airlifted.

The driver of that car was also injured and taken to the hospital.

The Sandhills Sentinel shared photos of the crash with ABC11.

Investigators say an Acura SUV carrying a mother and her 1-year-old child was among the vehicles hit. Both were hurt and taken to the hospital by ambulance.

A third vehicle, a pickup truck, was also involved, but that driver declined medical treatment.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, Southern Pines Police, Aberdeen Police, and the Moore County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities have not released additional details about the driver or any potential charges as of Saturday afternoon.
