Routine water-quality testing and follow-up sampling detected E. coli bacteria in a repeat sample collected Sept. 11. Repeat samples collected upstream and downstream of the original sampling location tested negative.
As a precaution, customers should boil tap water before drinking or using it for food preparation. Bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute and allow it to cool before use. Bottled water may also be used.
Officials advise residents to use boiled or bottled water for drinking, preparing food and beverages, making ice, brushing teeth, preparing infant formula, washing fruits and vegetables, washing dishes and giving water to pets. Residents should also discard any ice made with tap water from Sept. 8.
Bathing and showering are generally safe as long as water is not swallowed, though young children should be supervised.
The advisory will remain in effect until additional testing confirms the water is safe and state regulators authorize the town to lift the notice. The town said customers will be notified when boiling water is no longer necessary.
