RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- A Broughton High School teacher facing nearly two dozen child sex crime charges has resigned.

ABC11 learned of the new development after the Wake County Public School System confirmed the resignation.

Former teacher Steven Kohls, 57, appeared before a Wake County judge on Monday on six additional counts of statutory sex offense of a child by an adult. Prosecutors allege the offenses occurred between 2005 and 2016 and involved the same child.

The district said none of the alleged offenses happened on school property. Kohls had been teaching at Broughton High School since 2016.

Kohls, a Dunn resident, remains in jail without bond and has been ordered to have no contact with anyone younger the age of 18.

The six new charges follow earlier sexual abuse charges filed against him, which ABC11 first reported Friday.

WCPSS notified students and families of the allegations and in that message also stated that the alleged conduct did not occur on campus.

The investigation into Kohls' alleged offenses is ongoing.
