The school district informed parents of the student's death in a message sent to families. Officials have not publicly released the student's name or grade level.
The crash happened around 8 a.m. on U.S. 15 near White Oak Drive in Granville County. The road remained closed for several hours as emergency crews and investigators responded to the scene.
In a statement, a district spokesperson wrote:
"It is with heavy hearts that GCPS confirms that a South Granville High School student died in a car accident this morning. The family has been notified and has been given time to notify their extended family. We are providing layers of support at the school. The crisis team, which includes grief counselors, is on site at South Granville. We will have continued support at the school for the remainder of the week."
