'Suspicious device' found in Garner church parking lot safely destroyed, police say

GARNER, N.C. (WTVD) -- An investigation is underway after a suspicious device was found Friday morning in the parking lot of a Garner church.

After 7 a.m., officers found a suspicious device in The Capital Church parking lot on US-70.

The area was evacuated, and nearby roads were temporarily closed as explosive device technicians investigated. The device was confirmed to be hazardous and was safely destroyed with help from the Raleigh Police Department Hazardous Device Unit.

No fragmentation was associated with the device, and no injuries were reported. All roads have since reopened.

The Garner Police Department said there is no evidence suggesting the incident was religiously motivated.
