17-year-old driver facing charges after teen killed, another injured in crash in Apex

APEX, N.C. (WTVD) -- Police are investigating a car wreck that killed a 16-year-old after the driver was traveling about one hundred miles an hour Sunday night.

Tire tracks and debris remained at the scene of the accident. The deadly crash happened around 10:30 p.m. on U.S. 64 Highway near Knollwood Drive in Apex.

Investigators said the car went airborne and rolled over several times after it veered off the road. The teen who was riding in the back seat was partially ejected from the car. Police said they believe he was not wearing a seatbelt.

ABC11 News watched as loved ones of the victims emotionally walked through the crash site. One man said his nephew died in this car wreck and one of the other teenagers was also related to him.

Police said the 17-year-old driver did not have a valid driver's license and is now being charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. They believe all three of the teens involved in this accident live in Raleigh. According to investigators, the car was registered to someone in Raleigh.



The crash remains under investigation.
