DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Families showed up all morning picking up bags of toys to make sure kids in Durham will have a merry Christmas.

Kateshia Burns was in the holiday spirit. The mom of three stopped by Santa's Durham Workshop to pick up toys for her kids.

Two boys and her three-year-old little girl.

"My daughter loves all things color, rainbows, all the girls' stuff."

Kateshia is not working right now and like many families across the Triangle, things are tight, the help goes a long way.

"I need all the help I can get because I'm in school, I'm not working," said Burns.

That's the goal of 'Toys to Kids' annual toy drive, which started nearly 30 years ago by three Durham attorneys.

Sherrod Banks, James "Butch" Williams, and James Rogers.

Rogers stopped by to see the families who appreciate the community's generosity.

"We like to think we take the generosity of the community and these partners and turn it into joy for kids, creating one smile at a time during Christmas," he said.

The toy drive is a partnership with several community groups, including the Hayti Reborn-Justice Movement, which identified the families who need extra help this year.

In all, about 150 children received bags full of toys and clothes.

"We know that every year there may be kids who may not get gifts for Christmas. In addition to creating a smile for the kid,s it impacts the whole family and the whole family is seen when there are gifts under the Christmas tree," said Rogers.

For families without transportation, organizers will bring the toys to them.
