DUNN, N.C. (WTVD) -- A tractortrailer crash and fire early Sunday shut down the northbound lanes of I95 near Exit 71, triggering significant traffic delays and a hazardous materials response, officials said.
According to Dunn Emergency Services, crews were dispatched at 2:15 a.m., but construction barriers and backedup traffic slowed their approach. Firefighters reached the wreck at 2:24 a.m. to find the tractortrailer fully engulfed in flames.
The impact of the crash ruptured the truck's diesel tanks-which were carrying an estimated 120 to 240 gallons-sending fuel and firefighting runoff into a creek that flows into McLamb's Pond. Officials said they have not yet determined how much fuel was burned in the fire versus how much entered the waterway.
The truck driver suffered a hand injury but was able to walk away from the scene. The vehicle was hauling frozen food.
All northbound lanes of I95 at Exit 71 (Long Branch Road) near Fayetteville have since reopened, officials said.
