The closure affects Lake Wheeler Road between Dix Park and the State Farmers Market.
The project will create what city officials describe as a "complete street" with sidewalks, crosswalks and roundabouts designed to improve safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
The work is expected to take two years to complete, City leaders say.
People who live along the corridor are preparing for the impact of the construction. Ashley Denton, who lives on Lake Wheeler Road, said she knew the project was coming when she moved into her home.
"I was aware of the construction when I moved in here. So, you know, and we knew it would come, but we just didn't know when."
The construction work will also affect properties along the road.
While discussing construction markers near her property, Denton said, "I think so, I think that's like the furthest they can go without, going over that one."
The road closure marks the start of a lengthy construction period that will bring changes and disruptions to nearby residents.
Denton said she is not looking forward to the noise associated with the project. "I'm not really looking forward to the noise, but maybe just go to some coffee shops and hang out."
Despite those concerns, Denton said she believes the improvements will benefit Raleigh and make the area more accessible.
"I think it's going to add a lot of value to Raleigh. I think, you know, this is a really good area. So a lot of people are going to enjoy being able to be more accessible to downtown and farmer's Market and Dix Park."
Detour signs for drivers will be posted around the closed section of Lake Wheeler Road.
Travelers coming from Interstate 40 will use Goode Street to access Dix Park, while drivers coming from downtown Raleigh and South Saunders Street will use Umstead Drive.
