Chapel Hill man killed in collision with Amtrak train in Durham; 2 intersections remain closed

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Durham Police on Thursday identified the victim of a train accident as a Chapel Hill man.

The deadly incident happened shortly after 5:30 p.m. Tuesday near Ninth Street and Pettigrew Street. An Amtrak train struck and killed a pedestrian, subsequently closing two Durham intersections for hours.

DPD identified the pedestrian as Dashiell Garni Warren, 27.

Ninth Street at West Main Street and Swift Avenue at West Pettigrew Street remained closed to traffic until nearly 10:10 p.m.

Police said the passenger train was travelling east, and the engineer saw a man walking in its path. He told investigators that he blew the horn to alert the man, but the pedestrian did not move out of the way.

Warren was pronounced dead at the scene.



Police said no additional injuries were reported.

ABC11 reached out to Amtrak for more information but has not heard back.
