Train collides with tractor-trailer in Durham; truck driver injured

Updated 2 hours ago
DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- No serious injuries were reported after a tractor-trailer and a train collided Tuesday morning in Durham, officials say.

The crash happened around 9:45 a.m. at the intersection of Grant Street and Pettigrew Street. Investigators say a train struck the cab of a tractor-trailer. When the Durham Fire Department arrived, crews found the truck upright and pushed off to the side of the tracks.

During the collision, one of the truck's saddle tanks ruptured, causing diesel fuel to spill onto the ground. The Durham Fire Department's HAZMAT team handled the initial containment of the diesel spill. Durham County Emergency Management contacted a cleanup company to manage the remaining environmental response.

The truck driver was evaluated at the scene and did not appear to have serious injuries, first responders say. He was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

No passengers or crew members on the train reported injuries.

The accident is still under investigation.
