FAYTTTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- Family and friends gathered to honor the life of Trevor Jayshawn Merritt, 17, who tragically passed away in a car accident more than a week ago.

Grief was felt and seen as hundreds gathered inside True Vine Ministries wearing purple, which was Merritt's favorite color. His death occurred two weeks before his 18th birthday.

"I'm going to miss those Facetime calls. You calling and asking is my fit hard. I'm going to miss being your big sister more than anything," said Trinity Griffin, who is Trevor Merritt's sister.

Flowers and footballs adorned his purple casket. Merritt's father shared how much his son loved to win football games.

"Yall take care of each other. Win in life because Trevor hated to lose," said Jamaar Merritt.

There was not a dry eye in the room. The homegoing celebration was attended by family, friends, classmates and teammates.

Danareyn Hamlett was one of Merritt's football coaches at E.E. Smith High School.

"They just had a bright future. Real unfortunate that their life came to this," he said.

Merritt's mentor Gary Garner presented a plaque to the family.

"It's just an appreciation from the group for allowing us to pour into their lives. Today we felt it was fitting to present to Trevor's mother," said Garner.

Loved ones said Merritt had a bright smile, warm heart and loyal spirit. Some wore 'Forever 11' t-shirts recognizing his football jersey number. Many called his time on Earth short, but legacy unforgettable.

"When we run the concession stand, he told me the last time we had a conversation he asked me why didn't we have any hotdogs and hamburgers. So, we're going to have hot dogs and hamburgers the next time we have a football game.

Trevor leaves behind his parents and five siblings.

In the coming weeks, E.E. Smith alum as well as the booster club are planning to honor all three victims involved in the deadly car accident.
