From farm to fragrance: Triangle company crafts plant-based scents for everyday living

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- There's nothing better than walking into your home or car and being greeted by a pleasant scent. But some products designed to freshen the air may contain ingredients that aren't the best for you or your family.

That's what inspired Grow Fragrance, a North Carolina company focused on plant-based home scents.

"So we make everything here," said Daniel Swimm, the founder of Grow Fragrance. "We make candles here. We melt the wax. It's all plant-based wax and fragrances and we pour and let everything cool and set here."

Swimm said most traditional home fragrance products are made with synthetic ingredients derived from petroleum. Grow Fragrance takes a different approach -- their products are derived from plants.

"Our goal is to provide customers an alternative to traditional synthetic fragrances," Swimm said.

Swimm started in the candle business and saw a gap in the market for cleaner, plant-based options.

He added, "We want (customers) to have an option...that's safe, that they can feel good about and something that smells a little more like nature."

Grow Fragrance offers a variety of scents inspired by natural ingredients, including woodland sage, lavender blossom and cucumber aloe. Products range from candles to car fresheners and room sprays.

"Here's where we do all the pouring of the fragrances. Dan our engineer from NC State built and design all the equipment. So we mix and pour and set up over here. And cap over here with our sprayer cap," Daniel said.

Inside the Triangle-based facility, the entire process -- from mixing to pouring to packaging -- happens locally.

"We're a small business but it's quite complex. We need creative people, we need engineers, we need people to work in production, and we need marketers-really all different types of jobs. And we're really fortunate to have all of those people right here in the Triangle," Daniel said.

The company plans to expand its lineup by adding oil diffusers.
