The fall series is open to students, researchers, midcareer professionals, retirees and community members interested in learning how artificial intelligence can be applied in real-world settings.
The first session, "Become a Deploy AI Engineer," introduces participants to emerging career opportunities in the AI field, even for those without a traditional technology background. More than 50 people attended the inaugural workshop, where participants worked through real-world challenges and used AI-powered tools to develop solutions.
Retiree Scott Brown said the workshop offers an opportunity to continue learning in a rapidly changing world. "I'm retired, and a lot of retirees want to continue to do something," Brown said.
"I think it's a great opportunity."
During the 90-minute session, participants stepped into the role of an AI-augmented engineer, working through customer problems, building prototypes and refining solutions based on feedback.
Innovate Carolina's Sheryl Waddell said the goal is to help people integrate AI into their careers and everyday work.
"What we're looking to do is see how we can really integrate AI and the learning of AI to improve their jobs and look at how they can take AI and make it a part of their journey and their learning career," Waddell said.
Organizers say the workshops emphasize that while technology is evolving quickly, human-centered skills such as communication, critical thinking and problem-solving remain essential.
Brown said adapting to new technologies is becoming a necessity for workers across all industries.
"The world has changed tremendously over the years," Brown said.
"My attitude is to adapt the best we can. We all have to learn. We all have to pivot." The workshop series is part of Innovate Carolina's broader effort to support innovation, entrepreneurship and workforce development across North Carolina. Waddell said expanding AI education beyond the university campus allows the organization to serve a wider audience.
"It's great because you feel like you can have an impact," Waddell said. "You feel like you can be a part of that learning educational opportunity, not only for students, but also for the community." The workshops will be held monthly at The Junction,
Innovate Carolina's innovation hub in downtown Chapel Hill.
Organizers say upcoming sessions will continue to focus on practical, accessible applications of AI for people at all stages of their careers.
