It all began around 10 p.m. when a Wake County deputy saw a gray Nissan 370Z going 115 miles per hour in a 70 mph zone on Interstate 540 near Louisburg Road.
The driver of that Nissan, later identified as 18-year-old Aidan Joseph Gambone, refused to stop. He took off speeding down the interstate, through residential areas and even the parking lot of a Food Lion.
Deputies said Gambone repeatedly ran stop signs and crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic to pass slower vehicles
Eventually, Gambone ran a red light and crashed into a black Toyota Camry traveling east on Zebulon Road near Louisburg Road.
The force of the crash killed Gambone. The other driver was taken to WakeMed with non-life-threatening injuries.
This was not the first time Gambone had been accused of speeding. In April 2023, he was charged with going 88 miles per hour in a 65 mph zone. That case was later dismissed, but a month later he was pulled over and charged with going 107 in an area zoned for 70 mph. For that, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor and was fined $25.
Wake County Sheriff's Office said it was investigating the case.
"I can tell you with an ongoing pursuit, a continuing violation -- reckless driving, suspected impaired driving -- the continued danger to the public...the decision was made for deputies to continue to pursuit," Lt. Mike Fleer said.
