Wake Schools presents options to upgrade historic Ligon Middle School: 'Change is the only constant'

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) plans to invest at least $100 million to refurbish Ligon Middle School.

Alum Daniel Coleman said community members are now being included in the conversations after some tense moments.

"I think they've done the best they could," Coleman said about conversations with administrators. "Change is the only thing constant here."

Coleman doesn't oppose the district's plan, but he would prefer that the Raleigh school stay as it is, and he has been fighting to preserve it.

He told ABC11 that he understands the district is facing some financial constraints as it moves to refurbish the facility.

"We're in a financial pinch," said Coleman. "People don't have unlimited bonds to do things, but I have great confidence that the administration and the board members are fully aware of the headwinds that are out here."

Ligon opened as an all-black high school in the 1950s. The school was eventually integrated and then later turned into a middle school.

WCPSS is preparing for an upgrade to meet growing demand.

One proposal would be to renovate the existing building.

Another would be to construct a new school on a different section of the property site, and the third option would be to build new where the ballfield stands.

Design plans are supposed to be presented to the Wake County School Board in February.

Wake Schools leaders say there will be a series of meetings with different stakeholders beginning Jan. 7.

School Superintendent Dr. Robert P. Taylor also plans to meet with parents and students who are enrolled in the school sometime in the beginning of February.

"I have multiple dates to meet with alumni from the '70s, '80s, and '90s. I'm also going to be meeting with the staff," Taylor said.

"We're not going to satisfy 100% of the folks, but I think we have to do what is best for teaching and learning long-term," said Wake School Board Member Tyler Swanson.
