Hospitals updating visitor restrictions due to increase in viruses

Wednesday, December 24, 2025
RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Multiple medical providers have announced they are changing their visitor policies due to an increase in respiratory viruses.

WakeMed has issued new restrictions on visitors as we enter the heart of respiratory illness season.

Children younger than 12 will not be allowed to visit patients in WakeMed hospital units, patient care areas, and waiting rooms.

The restrictions will take effect at all WakeMed facilities.

Officials say the move will help reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses like flu and RSV.

The announcement comes after North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services reported the first child to die from complications of influenza for the 2025-2026 season.

Cape Fear Valley Health

Cape Fear Valley Health announced they are also changing their visitation and masking guidelines due to the increase in respiratory illnesses.

Visitors must now be 12 years old or older in most areas and all minors ages 12 to 17 must be accompanied by an adult.

Masks are required for all patients and visitors in waiting rooms including emergency department, ExpressCare, surgery, imaging, and outpatient clinic waiting rooms.

The changes go into place on Friday.
