Wayne Coats revealed Wednesday that after much prayer and reflection," he has decided to retire as the sheriff of Harnett County after 30 years of service.
Coats said he would fulfill the remainder of his term but not seek reelection in 2026.
"I would like to express my gratitude to the citizens of Harnett County for placing their trust in me," Coats wrote in a social media post. "It has been an honor serving you for the past 10 years as Sheriff."
Coats also worked for two years with the Dunn Police Department.
"I would especially like to thank all my staff, all the deputies, detention officers, and all of the civilian employees of the Sheriff's Office for their service," Coats wrote. "Your integrity, dedication, and support for me has been exceptional and I am privileged to have served as your Sheriff. If I leave any legacy, let it be this: God first, family second, and the Harnett County Sheriff's Office third."
